Mad Hatter Costume from Tim Burton's Alice in WonderlandMad Hatter Costume

Perhaps you want more than just the funny hat…if so, take a look at the entire Mad Hatter Halloween costume. It comes with a velvet jacket with lace trim sleeves, oversized bow, shirt front, pants, top hat, and hair.

If you want to be the Mad Hatter, be prepared with trivia about the character and movie:

While everybody knows the character as the Mad Hatter, he is never referred to by that name in Lewis Carroll’s novels.

The 10 / 6 on the top hat refers to its price: 10 shillings and 6 pence. This confirms for the reader or viewer that the character sells hats for a living.

While the story is usually called Alice in Wonderland, the characters and plot are taken from two Carroll stories: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.

Johnny Depp tried to bring out a more human side in his portrayal of the character, instead of just being “mad”. He and Tim Burton worked hard to give the Mad Hatter a lot of depth. The orange hair was meant to be a reference to mercury poisoning, something from which many hat makers used to suffer.

This was the seventh time Burton was a director for Depp’s work.

Amanda Seyfried and Lindsay Lohan were among those who did not get the role of Alice, which instead went to Mia Wasikowska.

All of the scenes with Anne Hathaway, who played the White Queen, were shot within two weeks.

We know that the Mad Hatter costume is an exciting costume that is very popular for Halloween. The Hatter’s hat is even a big seller at other times of the year. What is even cooler is that this costume is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dressing for Halloween night. If you happen to be celebrating with a group of friends and one of them is dressed as the Mad Hatter, the rest of you can dress accordingly and create a huge theme.

Johnny Depp Mad Hatter CostumeThe most obvious way that you can do this is for everyone to wear a Halloween costume from Alice in Wonderland. For the women, the most popular costume is Alice herself. This would be easy to put together, just start with a blue dress. Another possibility is the Queen of Hearts. This would be a really fun character to portray, as you can run around all night yelling, “Off with their heads!” Women could even wear a female Mad Hatter costume if they wish.
There are also gender neutral outfits (in addition to the Mad Hatter costume). The White Rabbit, the Dormouse, and the Cheshire Cat are all great costume suggestions. Twiddle Dee and Twiddle Dum also are common to see on Halloween.

If you want to go beyond Halloween, there are other characters to dress as that go well with a Mad Hatter costume. An idea that not everyone thinks of is to dress as one of the many Johnny Depp characters. Fortunately, there are many colorful people to choose from. Captain Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands, and Rango are just a few. Look up Johnny Depp on IMDB and see all of the other parts he has played. I’m sure you will find something that appeals to you.

If you are dressing up as the Mad Hatter for Halloween, you will need a Mad Hatter top hat to complete your costume. Because the Hatter’s appearance is so zany, a lot of people like to create their own Mad Hatter costumes. You have a lot of freedom to use your creativity to come up with the different pieces of attire that he wears.

While finding a coat or suit and other clothes shouldn’t be too difficult, the Hatter’s hat is the most difficult part of the costume. Creating a hat that is durable, stylish, and something that doesn’t look like it was made by a third grader can be a challenge. But check out this video for good instructions on making a Mad Hatter hat:

Here are the basic steps as described in the video:

  • Piece of poster board that’s ten inches tall (that will be the height of the top hat)
  • Make sure that when wrapped into a cylinder, it will fit on your head
  • Make the cylinder and tape it in place
  • Another piece of thicker cardboard that will be cut into a circle that has a 6-inch radius – this will create the top of the Mad Hatter hat that is wider than the bottom
  • Use a glue gun for connecting the two cardboard pieces together
  • Then hot glue material around the top of the hat, making sure you overlap the fabric once you go all the way around and glue it together
  • Tuck the fabric into the inside of the hat, pull it tight, and glue it in place
  • Take more fabric, draw a circle the size of the bottom of the hat, and then cut a hole in the middle of this circle
  • Cut slits in the fabric out to the edge of the circle
  • Take wire and wrap into a circle about 3 inches bigger than the circle you just drew
  • Put the top of the hat on the circle with the slitted fabric. Glue the fabric with the slits into the inside of the top of the hat
  • Then put the hat in the center of the wire, and then pull the outside of the fabric taught around the wire
  • Pin the wire in place and then sew the fabric together. Cut excess fabric around the brim of the top hat
  • Color or decorate the hat as you wish
  • Make a sash (or ribbon) for the hat – you can make it salmon colored like the Hatter played by Johnny Depp in Alice in Wonderland
  • Add the 10/6 tag, which will identify it as a Mad Hatter hat. Also add ostrich feathers and other decorations if desired

(These instructions probably will make much more sense if you watch the video too) :)

The video says the project is for people with an intermediate skill level, so making your own top hat could be a fun way for you to prepare for Halloween and add your own touch to your costume.
However, some people might prefer to save time and invest in a pre-made hat. Put the money you would have spent on materials toward the $25 or $30 a professionally constructed Mad Hatter top hat costs. You can still design the rest of the costume if you wish to add your own flavor to what you’ll wear for Halloween.
